This is the measurement of the gap between the child’s crotch and the top tube of the bike while standing.
There should be a gap of at least 5 inches and the kid should feel comfortable with it.
This can be achieved by first measuring the inseam height of the child.
The inseam height is the distance from the crotch to the floor.
This is not the inseam height of the pants though.
Have the child stand against a wall without the shoes and place a hardcover book in between the thighs and measure the distance from the crotch to the floor.
This length should be a couple of inches taller than the top tube height of the bike.
This ensures optimum height for comfort as well as for feeling confident.
The other aspect to look for is the space between the handlebars and legs while pedaling at the top of the stroke.
There needs to be adequate space otherwise the child would have to exert more to move the bike.
Likewise, this space should not be too large either as this can lead to lesser control of the bike.
WEIGHT: The other major factor that determines the quality and comfort of biking is the weight of the bike which is overlooked by many parents.
Ideally, bikes should be as lightweight as possible since kids’ physiques are not developed fully, unlike adults, to push around an object that is heavy in proportion to their body weight.
